When we listen to the smallest voices, we often find the biggest ideas.

Let’s meet the children of Through Their Eyes—Artcobell's movement to design learning environments from the perspective of students who use them every day.

Their personas will give you a first-hand perspective on how different learners perceive their surroundings. From the child who thrives when she can move to the one who needs a quiet corner to recharge, to the student who feels empowered when everything is within reach, we uncover opportunities to make environments more inclusive, more adaptable, and more inspiring when we see a classroom "through their eyes."

With this series, we invite you to imagine what education can become....

Hi, I’m Oliver.

I’m 10, and if you ever see me at school, you’ll probably notice two things right away:

I’m wearing a dinosaur shirt.

I have my headphones on.

Those two things help me feel like me—curious, comfortable, and ready to learn.

I have autism, which means I experience the world a little differently. Sounds can feel louder, lights can feel brighter, and busy classrooms can sometimes feel like too much all at once. When things get overwhelming, my brain needs quiet places and predictable routines to help me find my balance again.

But there are things I really love, too—especially dinosaurs, sketching, and anything that lets me think deeply without rushing. When I’m drawing a stegosaurus or reading about the Mesozoic Era, everything else fades away until it’s just me and the page.

This is what school feels like through my eyes.

MEET MY FRIENDS

I Learn Best in Calm, Quiet Spaces

Crowded classrooms can be overwhelming.
Lots of movement and noise can make my thoughts feel tangled and too fast.

That’s why I like having a personal workstation with privacy panels.
It’s like a little bubble where I can focus without all the extra things flashing or moving around me.

Sometimes I sit. Sometimes I stand.
An adjustable-height desk helps with that. When my body feels restless or my senses feel too full, standing helps me stay calm and regulated.

And when I need to think visually, the dry-erase desktop is perfect. I can sketch ideas quickly or draw dinosaurs while I’m working something out in my head.

Movement Helps Me Feel Comfortable

Even though I like quiet, I don’t like sitting completely still.

Flexible seating, especially seating the Soft Rocker, helps me move just enough—quietly, gently, consistently.
Movement helps my body settle.
Settling helps my mind focus.

And NXT MOV chairs are great because the seat and back move separately, which means I can wiggle without distracting anyone else.

Little movements can make a big difference.

I Need Breaks—Not Because I Can’t Do the Work, But Because I Want to Do It Well

When the lights are buzzing or the noise gets too big, I go to the PeacePod.

It’s quiet.
It’s soft.
It’s calm.
It’s mine when I need it.

Sometimes I draw.
Sometimes I read.
Sometimes I just sit and breathe.

Breaks help me reset so I can come back ready to learn again.

Organization Helps Me Feel Safe and Independent

I like knowing exactly where my things are.
My headphones.
My sketchbook.
My dinosaur fact cards.
My fidgets.

A mobile storage cart or cubby makes that easy. Everything has a clear place, and I don’t have to dig around or guess. It reduces stress, and it means I can start working right away instead of trying to find what I need.

Acoustic dividers and soft screens help keep loud parts of the room quieter. And a small task lamp—when we’re allowed to use it—helps me focus without harsh lighting.

I Do My Best Work When I Feel Like I Have Choices

Sometimes I want to work with just one partner.
Sometimes I want to work alone.
Sometimes I’m okay being near a group—but not in the group.

I like desks that can move easily so my teacher can change the room without making a big deal about it. It helps me feel like I have control over my space—even when the class is busy.

When I have choices, I feel confident.
And when I feel confident, I can think deeply, solve problems, and share the ideas that fill my imagination.

I’m More Than Just Quiet— I’m Observing, Thinking, and Creating

I may not talk a lot in big groups, but I notice things.
I remember details.
I think visually.
I care deeply about the things I love.

I learn best when the classroom feels predictable, calm, and respectful of my senses. With the right space—my desk, my nook, my movement seat, my routine—I can focus, explore, and shine in my own way.

Dinosaurs taught me something important:
There’s no one right way to exist in the world.
And in the right learning environment, I don’t have to change who I am to succeed.

This is what learning feels like through my eyes.
